Senate Approves N404bn Police Trust Fund Budget for 2025/2026

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate approved a total budget of N404.07 billion for the Nigerian Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the fiscal years 2025 and 2026. The budget comprises N170.10 billion for 2025 and N233.96 billion for 2026, aimed at strengthening police operations nationwide.

The approval followed a report presented by Senator Yunus Akintunde, the chair of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs. Senator Abdulhamid Ahm Mallam Madori from Jigawa East also contributed to the discussion.

The Senate noted that the previous budget had not been implemented due to legal issues surrounding amendments to the Nigerian Police Trust Fund Establishment Act. The current budget proposal was deemed necessary to fill funding gaps that have persisted for nearly three years.

Senator Barau Jibrin praised the committee's detailed work, expressing optimism that the approved funds would improve national security. The budget allocates 90 percent for capital expenditure, with the remaining for recurrent expenditure.
