Senate Reviews Electoral Act for 2027 Elections Timetable

The Nigerian Senate has initiated an extraordinary plenary session to consider a bill for the review of the Electoral Act. This session follows the release of the timetable for the 2027 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Lawmakers are expected to begin similar sessions in the House of Representatives, as they prepare to make crucial decisions on national matters. A notice issued by the Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prof.

Jake Dan Azumi, highlighted the necessity of reviewing the proposed election dates, which coincide with the Ramadan fasting period. This overlap could potentially affect voter participation, particularly in areas with large Muslim populations.

Consequently, lawmakers are seeking to align the electoral timetable with national religious considerations to ensure broader participation in the 2027 polls. A central recommendation in the bill proposes reducing the statutory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, aiming to provide greater flexibility in the electoral schedule while complying with constitutional requirements.

This development comes amid heightened public interest in electoral reform ahead of the upcoming elections.
