Senate to Review Electoral Act for 2027 Elections Timing

The Nigerian Senate is set to reconvene on Tuesday to revisit the Electoral Act bill, aiming to prevent the 2027 presidential and national assembly elections from occurring during Ramadan, which begins on February 20, 2027. This decision follows a motion sponsored by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, and was prompted by public outrage on social media regarding the election date coinciding with the Islamic holy month.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the upper chamber to address this matter, emphasizing the need for legislative intervention to ensure that the electoral process remains credible and inclusive. The Senate identified discrepancies within the bill, including inconsistencies in cross-references and serial numbers, which necessitated a comprehensive review.

The technical committee, comprising Senate leadership and legal drafting experts, will work to harmonize the bill and address these anomalies, ensuring that electoral timelines promote maximum participation and public confidence in the electoral system.
