Senate Screens Tinubu's Ministerial Nominee Muttaqha Darma

The Nigerian Senate began screening Muttaqha Darma, nominated by President Bola Tinubu for the position of Minister of Housing and Urban Development, on Thursday. The screening commenced at 12:32 PM, following a formal request from the President on Wednesday.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the communication from Tinubu during the plenary session, and the nomination was subsequently referred to the Committee of the Whole for further consideration. Darma, who holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Bayero University Kano, is expected to bring technical expertise to the ministry, which is crucial for addressing Nigeria's significant housing deficit and urban infrastructure challenges.

However, his nomination has sparked controversy due to his previous role as a deputy governorship candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party in the 2023 general elections, leading to his expulsion from the party. The Senate is anticipated to conclude the screening process and make a final decision on the confirmation soon.
