Senate Declares Ondo South Seat Vacant After Ibrahim's UN Role

The Nigerian Senate officially declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant after Ibrahim was appointed as Nigeria's permanent representative to the United Nations. The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session on Tuesday, with immediate effect as per constitutional provisions.

The Senate directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections within 30 days to fill the vacant seat, as mandated by the 1999 Constitution. Ibrahim began his diplomatic duties on April 20, presenting his letter of credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

This appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigeria's diplomatic engagement on global issues, with Ibrahim expected to articulate the country's positions on pressing international matters and participate actively in multilateral negotiations. Ibrahim is a businessman and politician representing the Ondo South senatorial district on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
