Senate Expands Safe Schools Initiative Probe to TETFund

On Tuesday, the Senate extended the lifespan of its ad hoc committee investigating the Safe Schools Initiative by three weeks and broadened the probe's scope to include the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This decision was made to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the funding, implementation, and accountability of education and social intervention programs related to student safety in Nigeria.

The motion was moved by Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chairman of the Senate Ad hoc Committee on the Safe Schools Initiative. Kalu indicated that preliminary investigations revealed strong links between the Safe Schools Initiative and various government agencies responsible for educational funding and student welfare.

The expanded mandate will allow the committee to evaluate financial flows, operational challenges, and accountability mechanisms across the Safe Schools Initiative and the involved agencies, including reviewing social safety net allocations and auditing infrastructure projects funded by TETFund.
