Senate Sets 14-Day Oath Deadline for Senators-Elect

The Nigerian Senate has enacted a new provision mandating that senators-elect must take their oaths of office within 14 legislative days following their inauguration. This amendment to the Senate's standing orders was recently adopted to address issues related to prolonged absences of elected lawmakers, which often lead to court cases and political disagreements.

If a senator-elect fails to take the oath within the specified period, the Senate may declare their seat vacant and notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize elections for the affected senatorial district. This rule aims to streamline the legislative process and ensure that the Senate is fully operational without unnecessary delays.

Additionally, the amendment stipulates that any individual interested in becoming the Senate President or Deputy Senate President must have served at least two full terms in the Senate.
