Senate Orders IGP to Investigate Plateau Killings

The Nigerian Senate has issued directives to the Inspector General of Police regarding the recent killings in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, which left at least 28 people dead. The upper chamber resolved to dispatch a high-powered delegation led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to commiserate with the victims' families and the affected communities.

This resolution followed a motion jointly sponsored by Senators Diket Plang from Plateau Central and Dachung Mwadkon from Plateau North, who raised concerns about the worsening security situation in the area. The Senate noted that Plateau State, once known for peace and tourism, has witnessed renewed violence, including a deadly attack in Kanam Local Government Area earlier in March.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the complex nature of the crisis, which has economic, ethnic, and religious dimensions, warning that persistent violence is forcing communities to flee their homes and disrupt farming activities, threatening food security in the region. The Senate emphasized the government's primary responsibility to protect lives and property and urged security agencies to adopt proactive strategies.
