Senate Lines Up Bills on Courts, Telecoms, Land and Health in June Sittings

The Nigerian Senate arranged a full legislative calendar for June 2026, with two major sitting dates bringing forward dozens of proposals affecting telecoms regulation, land management, court operations, and consumer protection. The chamber prepared to address structural reforms within the judiciary while simultaneously tackling sector-specific legislation that touches routine Nigerian economic activity.

During its June 3 sitting, the Senate introduced four fresh bills in their initial stage. These included modifications to how the Nigerian Communications Commission operates, a proposal to lift restrictions on certain exports, a framework for mapping and registering rural land holdings, and investment promotion reforms.

Three committee reports were also scheduled for review, along with a motion addressing widespread indiscipline across Nigerian society. The June 10 session carried an equally dense agenda.

Four additional bills reached the chamber for first reading, touching environmental health standards, governance structures at university teaching hospitals, financial relief for farmers and property owners impacted by construction or resource extraction, and revisions to rules governing consumer protection and fair competition. Two bills advanced to the second reading stage, both focused on judicial matters, while lawmakers reviewed reports on legal practitioners' regulation and police funding arrangements.

The June sittings reflect parliamentary focus on modernizing regulatory frameworks that govern major sectors while addressing long-standing land and agricultural grievances.
