Rivers Senator Barinada Mpigi Dies at 64

Senator Barinada Mpigi, representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, died on Thursday at the age of 64 following a brief illness. Mpigi was a significant figure in the Senate, having served as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, where he played a crucial role in overseeing federal road infrastructure projects across Nigeria.

His legislative career began in the House of Representatives after being elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2016, before moving to the Senate in 2019 under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). His death was announced during a Senate session, casting a somber mood among lawmakers who gathered for a budget defense session.

Senator Moham Onawo paid tribute to Mpigi, urging colleagues to honor his memory, while Akin Alabi expressed condolences, referring to him as a dear friend. Mpigi's passing comes just three months after the death of another lawmaker, Okei Ezea, representing Enugu North.
