Senate Moves to Halt Pardoning of Boko Haram Members

The Nigerian Senate has initiated a motion to stop the pardoning and rehabilitation of Boko Haram members and other criminals, citing escalating security issues in the country, especially in Northern Nigeria. Senator Abdulazeez Yar Adua led the discussion, expressing deep concern over the recent abduction and killing of retired military personnel, including former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar.

The Senate condemned the ongoing trend of violence against retired military officers, which has included several high-profile incidents from January 2023 to May 2026. Among those mentioned were the killings of retired Major General Richard Duru and Brigadier General O.M.

Harlord, alongside the abduction of 56 individuals, including a former NYSC Director General. The Senate emphasized the need for improved intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration to prevent future attacks, highlighting the broader implications of insecurity on national unity and public trust in the government.
