Oshiomhole Warns Akpabio of Potential Senate Loss

Adam Oshiomhole, a senator from Edo North, has raised concerns that Senate President Godswill Akpabio could lose his position under recently amended Senate rules. Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Oshiomhole described the new eligibility conditions for principal officers as unfair and politically motivated.

He stated that the amendments create a moral crisis, as they introduce disqualifications that could affect Akpabio's ability to occupy the Senate presidency. Oshiomhole pointed out that the new rules require a senator to have completed at least two uninterrupted consecutive terms to contest for principal offices, including the Senate presidency.

He noted that Akpabio has not served eight consecutive years in office, which is a requirement under the new rules. Oshiomhole criticized the attempt to alter longstanding parliamentary traditions to suit certain political interests, referencing former Senate President David Mark, who served for eight years under previous rules.

The debate surrounding these amendments has intensified within the National Assembly.
