Ningi Critiques Senate Rule Amendment as Self-Serving

Ningi, a senator representing Bauchi Central, expressed his displeasure regarding a recent amendment to the Senate rules that permits senators who have served at least four years in the National Assembly to contest for the positions of Senate President and Deputy Senate President. This amendment, introduced on Tuesday, has been described as controversial and appears to be aimed at benefiting certain individuals within the Senate.

Ningi articulated his concerns during a plenary session on Thursday, suggesting that the amendment is driven by self-serving interests rather than the collective good of the Senate. He noted that the rule change does not strictly apply to the current year, 2023, when the principal officers and committee chairpersons were appointed, despite some senators being given significant responsibilities without prior experience.
