Senate Calls for Stricter Mining Regulations After Landslide

The Senate has expressed concern over the tragic death of 20 mine workers during a landslide that occurred on July 14 in Alufele, Enjema District, within the Ankpa coal mining area. The incident was attributed to “significant ground failure” and resulted in several injuries.

Senator Isah Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, raised the issue as urgent, emphasizing the dangers posed by unsafe mining practices, particularly among artisanal miners who often lack formal employment contracts and social security protections. In response, lawmakers proposed a new law aimed at tightening regulations and imposing stiffer penalties for mining activities.

They called for an audit of licensed miners and suggested establishing a mining workers’ compensation scheme funded by mandatory contributions from mining firms. Additionally, the Senate urged the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to develop compulsory occupational accident insurance for all miners, including those in informal arrangements.

A mine rehabilitation and victims’ support fund was also proposed to assist affected families.
