SERAP Urges King Charles III on Nigeria's Human Rights Issues

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on King Charles III to address significant human rights concerns in Nigeria during President Bola Tinubu's upcoming visit to the United Kingdom. In an open letter dated March 18, 2026, signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP emphasized the importance of prioritizing human rights issues and the rule of law.

The organization expressed alarm over the increasing restrictions on civic space in Nigeria, including laws targeting journalists and critics. SERAP cited specific cases involving activists and journalists, warning that such actions undermine democratic accountability.

Additionally, the letter raised concerns about the conditions of internally displaced persons in northern Nigeria, particularly in states like Benue, Borno, and Plateau, highlighting their lack of access to basic rights, healthcare, and legal protection. SERAP urged King Charles to use his moral authority to encourage reforms that strengthen human rights protections in Nigeria and called for the Nigerian government to restore rights for displaced persons and ensure transparency in detention practices.
