Nepal Rescues Two Workers Trapped in Hydropower Tunnel

On Friday, two workers, Sanjay Sah, a mechanical foreman, and Kabir Maharjan, a mechanical supervisor, were rescued from the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station in Nepal, where they had been trapped since a disaster on August 26. Officials and rescue teams estimated that at least 900 people were trapped in tunnels connected to six hydropower projects along the Trishuli River.

Footage showed rescuers pulling Maharjan from a hole as onlookers cheered, and he was placed on a stretcher. Sah was carried out on the back of another worker and taken to a rescue tent for medical evaluation.

An army official reported that Sah’s vital signs were normal, while Maharjan was unable to move his hands and legs. Both workers were expected to be transported to a hospital in Kathmandu for further treatment.

The rescue occurred amidst ongoing searches for thousands missing after the disaster, which has resulted in at least 1,252 confirmed deaths in Nepal, with over 4,200 individuals still unaccounted for.
