Fani-Kayode Warns Jingir's Comments Could Hurt Tinubu

Femi Fani-Kayode, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to South Africa, cautioned that remarks made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, advocating for a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, could jeopardize President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. Fani-Kayode stated that Jingir's comments risk alienating Christian voters and exacerbating religious tensions, potentially providing opposition parties with a campaign issue against the All Progressives Congress.

He expressed concern over the reaction from various Nigerians, receiving over 100 calls and messages from both Christians and Muslims. Fani-Kayode criticized the Governor of Kano State for supporting Jingir's stance, emphasizing the need to avoid using religious identity for political gain.

He highlighted the significance of Nigeria's large Christian population and the ongoing allegations of religious persecution, arguing that Jingir's statements could reinforce negative narratives about the government. Fani-Kayode concluded that winning the 2027 election requires support from both Muslim and Christian voters, and Jingir's comments could undermine that goal.
