Shettima Urges Media to Strengthen Democracy Through Critique

During a public presentation in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima addressed the Nigerian media, urging them to leverage their platforms to enhance democracy through constructive criticism and critical thinking. He made these remarks at the 60th birthday celebration of veteran journalist Babajide Kolad Otitoju, who is also the director of new TVC.

Shettima highlighted the importance of media in democracy, stating that it should not merely be a ritual of elections but a vital institution that interrogates ideas and holds power accountable. He praised Otitoju for his contributions to journalism and emphasized the need for journalists to engage in public discourse responsibly.

Shettima also noted that the media must be vigilant against falsehoods and should strive to illuminate truth, as the deterioration of public institutions often begins when the media fails to question power. Other notable figures, including Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Mallam Danladi Bako, also paid tribute to Otitoju's career and impact on journalism in Nigeria.
