FG to Establish Fire Stations in 109 Senatorial Districts

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish fire stations in all 109 senatorial districts as part of measures to strengthen emergency response and curb recurring fire disasters. This initiative was disclosed by Olumod Samuel Adeyemi, the head of the Federal Fire Service, during a site assessment visit to Kano State following a fire incident on February 14.

The establishment of dedicated fire posts, particularly in major markets, aims to improve response times and control fire outbreaks. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji Ojo expressed sympathy for the affected traders and residents.

Adeyemi highlighted that the firefighting response to the Singer Market incident was hindered by obstructed access and identified faulty electrical wiring and unsafe fuel storage as major causes of the fire. The Federal Fire Service plans to intensify public awareness campaigns and ensure compliance with fire safety standards.

Additionally, there are proposals to amend the Fire Service Act to enhance enforcement powers.
