Sokoto govt partners UNICEF, EU-SUSI to increase social protection coverage

Sokoto State Government has partnered with UNICEF and the European Union Sustainable Inclusive Social Protection project to increase social protection coverage. The partnership aims to review the National Social Protection Policy and update the National Social Register.

The Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Muhammad Zayyana, emphasized the importance of this initiative in tackling multidimensional poverty in the state. Sokoto recently conducted a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) survey to generate reliable data, with technical support from the Sokoto State Bureau of Statistics and Redware.

The program aims to enroll one million poor and vulnerable households in the National Social Register across four states by the end of the year. UNICEF has donated equipment to support this effort.

The collaboration is expected to expand access to federal social protection schemes and help in the fight against poverty and inequality in Sokoto State.
