Sokoto State Introduces Free Delivery Kits for Mothers

The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to introduce free delivery kits for women giving birth in public health facilities as part of efforts to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. Health Commissioner Dr.

Faruk Abubakar disclosed this initiative on Monday during the dissemination of the Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care assessment report in Sokoto. The government will also provide solar lighting for labor rooms and maternity units while strengthening antenatal care services.

Abubakar noted progress in health indicators, including improved immunization coverage and a decline in maternal and child mortality, but emphasized the need for further action. He identified three delays contributing to maternal mortality: delays in seeking medical attention, reaching health facilities, and receiving adequate care.

Abubakar stated that over 60% of resolutions from the National Health Council had been implemented in Sokoto. Local Government ALGON Chairman Abba Shehu called for the program's extension to all 23 local government areas, while Kabiru Dauda, Chairman of the House Committee on Health, pledged legislative support for the initiative.
