Wale Elected New Prime Minister of Solomon Islands

Wale has been elected as the new Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, defeating Peter Shanel Agovaka with a vote tally of 26 to 22. This election occurred after the recent ousting of incumbent Jeremiah Manel, who lost power last week.

The Solomon Islands, located 1,600 km (1,000 miles) northeast of Australia, has been focusing on strengthening ties with China, particularly after signing a security pact with Beijing in 2022, which has raised concerns among the United States and other Pacific neighbors regarding regional security. Wale has criticized this deal, stating it jeopardizes existing relationships with partners.

Following Wale's election, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese congratulated him and indicated that Australia would provide 100 million AUD to the Solomon Islands' police force, reaffirming Canberra's role as a security partner. Connor Graham, a research specialist at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, commented on the implications of this political shift.
