Julius Malema Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was sentenced to five years in prison by a South African magistrate's court on Thursday. The court found him guilty on five counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public place, related to an incident that occurred in 2018 at a stadium in Eastern Cape Province.

Following the judgment, Malema's legal team applied for leave to appeal, with the application filed within minutes of the court's decision. The court upheld the appeal process, which bars Malema from serving as a lawmaker during the appeal.

This ruling poses a significant setback for the EFF, which is currently the fourth largest party in South Africa's parliament and enjoys strong support among young voters. The EFF was established to address persistent racial inequalities that have continued since the end of apartheid in 1994.
