South African DJ and producer DJ Maphorisa claimed that South Africans provided Nigerians with the "green light" to embrace Amapiano music, a genre that has gained significant popularity in Nigeria. He made this assertion while discussing the genre's expansion beyond South Africa.

Maphorisa highlighted the collaboration "Sponono," which features Kabza De Small alongside Nigerian artists Burna Boy and Wizkid, as a crucial track that facilitated the connection between Nigerian artists and Amapiano. He described "Sponono" as a major record that played a significant role in exposing the sound to a broader Nigerian audience.
