South Korea Secures Crude Oil Deal with UAE Amid Tensions

On Friday, South Korea finalized a crude oil deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to enhance its oil supply in response to the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has disrupted energy markets. The deal includes the dispatch of two South Korean-flagged oil tankers, each capable of carrying 2 million barrels, to an alternative port in the UAE that does not require passage through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.

This strait is crucial as it handles about 70% of South Korea's crude oil imports. Additionally, Kang Hoon Sik, the Chief of Staff to the President of South Korea, announced that the UAE will hold 2 million barrels in a strategic reserve for South Korea, which can be accessed upon request.

This agreement is significant as it comes at a time when Iran claims control over the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for a substantial portion of the world's crude oil flow.
