Nigeria's Sovereignty Tied to Space Research, Expert Says

During the 4th Dr. Adigun Ad Abiodun Memorial Lecture held at the University of Lagos on Tuesday, Dr.

Emmanuel Ekuwem, CEO of a telecom group, highlighted the critical role of space research and development in ensuring Nigeria's sovereignty. He lamented that African nations, including Nigeria, are not adequately benefiting from advancements in outer space due to insufficient political support and funding.

Ekuwem pointed out that Nigeria lacks a robust space policy and criticized the political landscape for failing to prioritize qualified leadership in space science. He called for Nigeria to develop its indigenous satellite capabilities and invest in higher education institutions to foster space research.

The event was attended by academics, researchers, and policymakers, with Prof. Peter Olufemi Adeniyi serving as the chairman.

Ekuwem's remarks underscored the need for African states to master space technology to elevate their economies and ensure sustainable development.
