Equatorial Guinea Gains Fast-Track Citizenship in Spain

Spain's government has announced that Equatorial Guinea is the only African country whose nationals can apply for Spanish citizenship after just two years of legal residency, a notable reduction from the standard ten-year requirement for most foreign nationals. This information was released by Spain's Ministry of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, which details the various pathways for foreign citizens to acquire Spanish nationality.

Nationals from specific countries, including Equatorial Guinea, benefit from this expedited process due to historical connections, as Equatorial Guinea is Spain's only former colony in sub-Saharan Africa where Spanish is an official language. All applicants, regardless of residency duration, must fulfill three core requirements: demonstrate continuous and legal residency in Spain, maintain a clean criminal record from their home country, and pass sociocultural assessments administered by the Instituto Cervantes.

Nationals of Spanish-speaking countries, including Equatorial Guinea, are exempt from the language component of these tests.
