Spain's Ruiz and Gavi Rewarded with Tomatoes for Victory

Spain midfielders Fabian Ruiz, currently with Paris St-Germain, and Gavi, from Barcelona, were honored in their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca after being part of the Spain squad that won the World Cup 2026 in North America. The official reception occurred on Wednesday at the town hall, where they wore their gold medals.

As part of the celebration, they stepped on weighing scales to determine the amount of tomatoes they would receive, with Ruiz set to receive 85kg and Gavi 68.5kg. This tradition is noted as a hallmark of the municipality for honoring its athletes.

Former Spain winger Jesus Navas, who was the first player from Los Palacios y Villafranca to win the World Cup in 2010, also attended the event. The town plans to rename football fields after Ruiz and Gavi and construct a monument dedicated to them and Navas, celebrating their achievements and role as local role models.
