SPIN Conference Advocates for Core Business Sustainability

The Sustainability Professionals Institute of Nigeria (SPIN) held its inaugural Sustainability Conference in Lagos, urging companies to transition sustainability from a mere reporting function to a core business strategy. President of SPIN, Prof. Kenneth Amaeshi, emphasized that sustainability frameworks should reflect Nigeria's unique economic and institutional realities.

The conference, themed ‘The Adaptive Enterprise: Sustainability Strategies for Challenging Times’, gathered business executives, policymakers, and sustainability professionals to discuss resilience and long-term value creation. Kolawole Owodunni, Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, delivered the keynote on behalf of Aminu Umar-Sadiq, the Managing Director and CEO of NSIA.

He highlighted the necessity for sustainability to be central in corporate decision-making due to economic volatility, climate change, and regulatory changes. Owodunni also noted that sustainable finance should encompass governance and risk management beyond just green bonds.

The conference underscored the evolving expectations for sustainability professionals, who will require diverse skills, including financial and climate-risk management.
