Stakeholders Urge Context-Driven Sustainability Standards

During the inaugural sustainability conference organized by the Sustainability Professionals Institute of Nigeria (SPIN) in Lagos, stakeholders in the sustainability profession advocated for context-driven practices and stronger professional standards among organizations. The conference, themed ‘The Adaptive Enterprise: Sustainability Strategies for Challenging Times,’ gathered sustainability professionals, business leaders, policymakers, and investors to discuss how organizations can adapt and create long-term value amid uncertainty.

Prof. Kenneth Amaeshi, President of SPIN, emphasized the importance of contextualizing sustainability practices to meet local needs rather than relying on imported frameworks. He stated that while global standards are relevant, their application must yield outcomes pertinent to Nigeria's economic and social context.

Kolawole Owodunni, Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), delivered the keynote speech on behalf of NSIA's Managing Director, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, highlighting uncertainty as a central challenge. Panelists noted that compliance should be viewed as a baseline rather than a competitive advantage.
