SSANU Issues One-Month Ultimatum to FG Over Agreement

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), led by President Muhammad Ibrahim, has given the Federal Government a one-month ultimatum to conclude the renegotiation of a 2009 agreement. This announcement was made during SSANU's 54th National Executive Council meeting held in Ekiti State.

The union warns that failure to finalize negotiations by April 30, 2026, will leave them with no choice but to embark on industrial action in collaboration with the Joint Action Committee, which includes the National Association of Academic Technologists (NASU). SSANU criticized the slow pace of negotiations, citing a lack of clear timelines and firm commitments from the government, and condemned delays in salary payments and unpaid increments.

The union also raised concerns about rising inflation, underfunding of universities, poor infrastructure, and insecurity on campuses, warning that these issues undermine Nigeria's global academic competitiveness. SSANU rejected the public-private partnership model, which they believe leads to job losses, and called for sustained dialogue to prevent further industrial disputes.
