Tax Ombud Office Promotes Fairness in Nigeria's Tax System

The Office of the Tax Ombud has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria's tax administration. This commitment was expressed during a stakeholder engagement forum themed “Promoting Fairness, Transparency, and Trust in Tax and Revenue Administration in Nigeria.” Dr.

John C. Nwabueze, the Tax Ombud/Chief Executive, highlighted the need to balance revenue collection with taxpayer rights, stating that tax administration should foster understanding and trust among taxpayers.

He noted that Nigeria is the third African country to adopt the tax ombud mechanism, aligning with global best practices and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Office plans to expand its physical presence across Nigeria and handle operational, procedural, and administrative complaints.

Dr. Nwabueze assured that the institution is impartial and accessible, with a Taxpayer Bill of Rights and Obligations Charter set to launch soon.

He called for increased partnership among stakeholders to build a trusted tax system.
