Tax Ombud Enhances Capacity for Digital Asset Disputes

The Office of the Tax Ombud, under the leadership of Dr John Nwabueze, is strengthening its capacity to address emerging tax disputes, especially those related to the taxation of digital assets in Nigeria. During a breakfast meeting with business editors in Lagos, Nwabueze emphasized the office's commitment to fairness, transparency, and accountability in tax administration.

The office has made significant advancements by introducing a digital complaints portal, a case management system, a toll-free call center, and SMS callback services, which have improved access for taxpayers. Within three months, the office received over 20 genuine complaints, resolving eight within the statutory 14-day period.

Nwabueze also mentioned plans to establish offices in all six geopolitical zones and to engage in a nationwide public sensitization campaign to educate taxpayers about issues like multiple taxation. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the independent tax ombudsman institution, which aims to enhance voluntary tax compliance and public confidence in the tax system.
