Stakeholders Urge Action on Gas Decarbonisation in Africa

At the 2026 Green Conference held in Lagos, Omotenioy Majekodunmi, the Director General of the Nigerian National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), called for collective action towards gas decarbonisation to accelerate Africa's climate sustainability goals. She emphasized the importance of investing in industrialisation to ensure climate sustainability while maintaining economic growth.

Majekodunmi pointed out that natural gas systems should not contribute to high greenhouse gas emissions and advocated for the deployment of advanced green technologies, including carbon capture and storage. She noted that Nigeria has already taken concrete steps towards gas decarbonisation by establishing a robust framework for monitoring emission reductions.

Additionally, Daniel Galadima, the Director General of the Niger State Agency for Green Initiatives, signed a memorandum of agreement with Greenplinth to deliver 2 million clean cookstoves to indigent residents in Niger State, marking progress towards democratizing access to clean energy.
