Tinubu's State Police Bill Receives Praise from Aris

Ayodele Aris, a former member of the National Assembly representing Ekiti North from 2007 to 2011, praised President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for the swift passage of the state police bill. The Senate approved the bill on Wednesday, following the House of Representatives' earlier approval.

This legislation allows states to establish their own police services, recruit personnel, and address local security challenges while adhering to national minimum standards. Aris emphasized that state police could significantly mitigate security threats in Nigeria.

He acknowledged concerns about potential abuses of power by state governors but expressed hope that the 10th National Assembly would implement constitutional safeguards to prevent such abuses. He noted that successful multi-layered policing systems exist in countries like the United States and Canada, and he urged for checks and balances to ensure accountability in the proposed dual police structure.
