ADC Calls for Recommitment of State Police Bill for Debate

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the House of Representatives to recommit the proposed State Police Constitution Alteration Bill to a fresh legislative process. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC expressed support for the creation of state police to address Nigeria’s security challenges but criticized the amendment process for allegedly undermining the Constitution.

The party raised concerns about reports indicating that the constitutional voting requirements were not met, citing instances of lawmakers voting via WhatsApp while absent and counting members who only signed the attendance register. The ADC emphasized that constitutional amendments must follow strict procedures and require thorough public scrutiny, particularly for significant reforms like the State Police Bill.

The party warned that without proper examination, the legislation might reflect only the ruling party's interests rather than addressing citizens' concerns. The ADC urged the House to ensure a constitutional, transparent, and inclusive legislative process for the bill.
