ADC Demands Fresh Process for State Police Bill Passage

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the House of Representatives of constitutional violations in the passage of the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill. In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC called for the bill to be recommitted to a fresh and transparent legislative process.

The party raised serious legal concerns regarding reports that the constitutional threshold was met through "WhatsApp votes" from absent members and by counting members who had left the chamber during the vote on July 23, 2026. The ADC supports state policing to address Nigeria's security challenges but insists that the constitutional amendment process must not be undermined.

They argued that the current version of the bill lacked adequate public scrutiny and warned against passing significant legislation for political expediency. The ADC emphasized that constitutional alterations require openness and robust debate, which they believe were not present in this case.
