Senate Proposes Safeguards for Decentralized Police System

The Nigerian Senate has assured citizens of safeguards against potential abuses in the proposed decentralization of the police system. Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate leader, disclosed that the framework would include strong measures to prevent political abuse and ensure accountability.

This initiative, which aligns with Nigeria's federal structure, aims to enhance the protection of lives and property, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The proposal, which has received backing from President Bola Tinubu, includes a 75-page framework outlining a two-tier police system comprising federal and state police services.

The Senate plans to implement this framework over a 60-month period, beginning with constitutional amendments in the first year. The proposal also emphasizes redistributing police personnel and embedding strict measures to prevent political interference.

Bamidele commended Tinubu's administration for its efforts to stabilize the country's security architecture and address the root causes of terrorism and violent crime.
