Ndagoso Advocates for State Police in Nigeria's Security Reform

Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and Catholic Archbishop of Kaduna Archdiocese, expressed support for the proposed establishment of state police during the 2026 Priests’ Day celebration in Kaduna.

He stated that state police could succeed if backed by appropriate laws, accountability, and effective oversight. Ndagoso argued that local officers would be more familiar with their communities, enhancing security.

He acknowledged the potential for abuse in any policing system but insisted that fears of abuse should not hinder necessary reforms. He emphasized that Nigeria's major challenge lies not in the absence of laws but in the failure to enforce them, advocating for consequences for lawbreakers to curb institutional abuses.

Additionally, he called for greater involvement of local leaders in security matters, highlighting their valuable knowledge of their communities. Ndagoso also mentioned the Catholic Church's willingness to partner with governments to improve education standards, advocating for collaborative arrangements regarding mission schools.
