DAWN DG: State Police Will Not Disrupt Amotekun Operations

Seyi Oyeleye, the Director General of the DAWN Commission, asserted that the formation of state police will not disrupt the operations of Amotekun, the regional security network in South West Nigeria. During a roundtable session titled "Foundation of State Police in South West Nigeria," held at the Dipo Famakinwa Conference Room in Ibadan, Oyeleye discussed the growing momentum at the federal level to establish state police.

He noted that Amotekun and state police can coexist within the region's security architecture. Oyeleye addressed concerns about potential abuse of power by state police, referencing past experiences with security outfits in the region.

He highlighted that the establishment of state police is expected to occur by early 2027, with a bill already in the national assembly. Oyeleye emphasized the importance of a research-driven approach to avoid replicating the shortcomings of the federal police system.

He also mentioned that Amotekun could serve as a forest ranger, indicating a collaborative role in tackling crime in the region.
