Afenifere Advocates for State Police Amid Rising Insecurity

On Tuesday, Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, rallied support for the creation of state police in Nigeria's Southwest, despite concerns over potential abuse by state governors. Jare Ajayi, the group's public secretary, expressed serious concerns about the increasing security threats in the region, citing a rise in kidnappings and banditry.

Ajayi highlighted recent incidents, including the kidnapping of a medical doctor's brother in Ondo State, which reflect the growing boldness of criminal groups. He warned that the situation requires urgent coordinated action from security agencies, as banditry is spreading beyond traditional strongholds.

Ajayi stressed that a strong legal framework is necessary to allow citizens to challenge abuses in court and that the establishment of a state police council should involve various societal sectors, not just governors. He concluded by urging Southwest governors to demonstrate political will to tackle insecurity and protect communities from further attacks.
