Vice Chancellors Face Dismissal Risks from Governors

Chinedu Nwajiuba, a former vice chancellor of the Federal University Ndufu Alike, highlighted the precarious position of state university vice chancellors in Nigeria, stating they are at risk of being dismissed by governors and their wives. During a lecture at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia State, he noted that this situation contributes to high blood pressure among academic staff.

Nwajiuba emphasized that governors often feel entitled to terminate vice chancellors' appointments if they believe the vice chancellors are not fulfilling their expectations. He also pointed out that the influence of governors and their families can lead to a loss of respect for vice chancellors, as they become embroiled in political intrigues rather than focusing on their academic roles.

Nwajiuba commended Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iw for fostering unity and good relationships among staff during his tenure at the university, which concluded recently.
