Nigeria's States Earn N114bn from Road Taxes in Three Years

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the 36 states of Nigeria collected a total of N113.94bn from road taxes between 2023 and 2025. The collections were N40.14bn in 2023, N23.92bn in 2024, and N49.88bn in 2025.
The decline in 2024 was significantly influenced by the absence of Lagos State's road tax figure, which reported N16.74bn in 2023 and N16.87bn in 2025. Delta emerged as the largest collector outside Lagos, generating N8.64bn over the three years, with collections increasing from N2.60bn in 2023 to N3.33bn in 2025.
Other notable states included Ondo with N5.99bn, Ogun with N5.49bn, and Edo and Cross River with N5.32bn and N5.28bn, respectively. In 2025, Lagos returned to the top with N16.87bn, while Bauchi and Nasarawa recorded significant increases of 357.32 percent and 357.23 percent, respectively.
Conversely, Kebbi experienced the steepest decline, dropping 73.52 percent from 2024 to 2025.
