Stop Niger Governor, NBC From Intimidating Badeggi FM – SERAP, NGE Tell Court

Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have taken legal action against the Governor of Niger state and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for intimidating Badeggi FM Radio in Minna. The governor and NBC have threatened to shut down the station and weaponize NBC laws to crackdown on the independent media outlet.

SERAP and NGE argue that this intimidation violates the station's right to freedom of expression and access to information. They have filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking a declaration that the governor and NBC have a legal duty to protect Badeggi FM from ongoing intimidation.

The ongoing threats and harassment against the station owner and staff members are seen as a breach of constitutional and international human rights obligations. The lawsuit aims to prevent further intimidation and ensure the station can continue to operate freely and contribute to public debate without fear of reprisal.
