Tinubu Critiques Atiku's Fuel Subsidy Comments

President Bola Tinubu addressed comments made by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, regarding the reinstatement of fuel subsidies if he wins the 2027 election. Speaking at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, Tinubu criticized Atiku's statement as indicative of "serious ignorance in governance and the economy." He highlighted that prior to his administration, 27 states struggled to pay workers' salaries, but the removal of fuel subsidies has allowed states to meet these obligations.

Tinubu's administration announced the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Nigerian currency, the naira, upon his assumption of office on May 29, 2023. Despite the challenges faced by average Nigerians due to rising petrol prices, Tinubu asserted that the subsidy removal has led to improvements in salary payments to workers and pensioners.
