Atiku Abubakar Challenges Tinubu on Fuel Subsidy Policies

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar stated that “even 100 million Tinubus” cannot stop him from restoring a targeted subsidy aimed at protecting Nigerians from the economic difficulties caused by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s fuel price policies. In a statement made through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of committing “one of the biggest economic frauds” by claiming to have removed subsidies while still providing tax credits and fiscal incentives to the petroleum industry.

He highlighted the drastic increase in petrol prices and related costs following Tinubu's announcement that subsidies were eliminated. Atiku pointed to the NNPC's audited accounts, which indicated significant energy-security expenses, questioning the disappearance of the subsidy and the rationale behind the government's interventions favoring oil investors over ordinary citizens.

He proposed a targeted, capped, and transparently budgeted intervention through his Atiku Economic Recovery Plan (AERP), which aims to support Nigerians without reverting to the previous opaque subsidy regime.
