Sultan of Sokoto Calls for Peaceful Politics Ahead of 2027

On September 28, 2026, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, called for peace among politicians and their supporters as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. This appeal was made during a visit from the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, along with the NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Dr Shamsu Haido, and other party members.

The Sultan emphasized the constitutional right of politicians to present their manifestos but urged them to do so responsibly, avoiding insults and inflammatory language that could incite violence. He stressed the importance of unity and stability over political differences, reminding leaders to lead by example.

This visit followed a previous meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council on September 14, 2026, where similar discussions on national issues took place.
