Eight Killed in Suspected Cult Attack in Makurdi

A suspected cult attack in Makurdi, Benue State, resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals in the early hours of Monday, around 2 AM. Residents reported that armed men invaded Aliad Street, entering compounds and shooting four people who were asleep.

Joseph Keffi, the chairman of the Makurdi Local Government Area, explained that the assailants arrived on motorcycles and carried out the attack between 2 AM and 2:30 AM. The incident is believed to be related to a clash involving suspected cult members from the North Bank area.

Keffi noted that the attack led to the deaths of individuals who were not cult members. Security agencies have been alerted and are working to apprehend those responsible.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and a private hospital in Makurdi. Ifeanyi Emenari, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident but did not provide an exact casualty figure, stating it was lower than eight.

A public relations statement from the police is expected later.
