Over 80 Cattle Die from Poisonous Grass in Adamawa

In Adamawa State, over 80 cattle have died after consuming a grass known as Fulfuld wild sorghum, which is suspected to contain cyanide poison. Dr.

Bartholomew Nyala, the director of Veterinary Services in Adamawa, stated that such incidents typically occur when cattle graze on the plant during the first rainfall, leading to rapid fatalities due to high concentrations of poison. He urged the public to report any suspected cases of animal disease to the nearest veterinary office across the state's 21 local government areas.

In response to the situation, Idu Idri, the commissioner for livestock and agricultural development, confirmed that immediate actions have been taken to identify and destroy affected cattle to prevent further spread. Samples of the grass and meat have been sent for further investigation.

Local officials, including Dr. Saad Usman, have expressed sympathy to the affected communities and assured support to address the suspected cyanide poisoning linked to the grass.
