Sweden Arrests Chinese Captain of Suspected Shadow Fleet Ship

On Sunday, the Swedish Coast Guard arrested a Chinese captain aboard the 182-meter (597-foot) vessel Jin Hui, suspected of being part of Russia's "shadow fleet." This fleet consists of ships that evade Western sanctions, often operating in poor condition and lacking proper insurance. The Jin Hui was reportedly sailing under a false Syrian flag, raising concerns about its ownership and operational transparency.

The captain's arrest was confirmed by Carl Oskar Bohlin, Sweden's Civil Defence Minister, who stated that the captain is being held on suspicion of using forged documents and violating Sweden's maritime code regarding seaworthiness. The captain will be interrogated, and the investigation is being led by prosecutor Adrien Combier Hogg.

The Jin Hui is included on sanction lists from the EU, Britain, and Ukraine, highlighting its contentious status in international waters.
